In today’s dynamic work environment, soft skills play a crucial role in the success of federal employees. These skills go beyond technical expertise and encompass qualities such as communication, leadership, problem-solving, and adaptability. Federal employees should continually invest in developing their soft skills to thrive in their careers and contribute effectively to their organizations.

Why do people choose to work in the public sector? Instead of chasing profits, the work of public service impacts every American. Think about it. Our food, housing, education, healthcare, natural resources, manufacturing, and national security are all defined and regulated by the federal government to some extent.

When it comes to having a dynamic workforce, it is essential to hire employees who possess well-refined soft skills. Soft skills characterize how a person relates to others and are a vital part of any high-performing organization. These interpersonal skills and personal attributes are acquired over time through mentorship, training, and coaching.

I continually research project management “success factors” – those things successful projects do better than other projects. If success was just about getting a project management certification, I would think there would be a correlation between the increase in project management certifications and an increase in successful projects. I contend we are getting better at delivering successful projects, however, I feel there are still major obstacles in being successful.
